Ways To Teach You Child To Be Grateful

Saying ‘thank you’ is very important but it is often more about being polite than showing gratitude. Expressing gratitude helps to provide us with perspective, slows down our busy lives and also creates a healthy sense of balance.

Teaching your child to be grateful is not very easy. It is a difficult concept for the younger children to understand and the same can be a very frustrating process trying to instil this important concept. But do not worry, there are several ways you can teach your kids about gratitude that will not take up too much time.

Here are some to get you started:

· Model Gratitude

If you are in the process of teaching a child to be grateful, you must model gratitude yourself. You must say thank you when you mean it and make sure your child knows when you are grateful for something they do too. The children always look to adults to model their own behaviour so make sure you practice what you preach.

· Create a Ritual

The simplest way to include gratitude in your family’s daily life is to talk about it at the dinner table. During your last meal each night, you should have everyone list one thing that they happened to love about their day. This tends to help children to see that even on days that feel bad to them, there is always something to be grateful for- even if it’s only that they got through it.

· Say ‘ thank you’

It is about more than just having good manners. When you happen to feel genuinely grateful for something or someone, you must say thank you. You must write thank you notes, say thank you in person and post positive reviews on social media. At the end of the school year, you child should be able to write a note of thanks to their teacher. But remember, you must not force it. Instead, you should only encourage your child to say thanks when it is due, and when they truly mean it.

Your child should not only be able to feel gratitude but also express it when needed.
